On a mission to transform one of the world’s most pollutive industries in Construction, this company are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to join them, with occasional visits to their London office.

The client

In a nutshell, their product allows you to make an informed decision on cost, carbon and quality when constructing any building.

After oversubscribing their Series A investment round they need someone to join them who’s eager to help build a sustainable future.

What will you be doing?

Initially you’ll be managing three engineering teams (AI, Data & Platform/Web), which currently consist of 7 people plus a QA. However, they have plans to more than double the business in size over the next 18 months so this head count will increase.

The role itself is very focussed on the people side; they want someone to come in and help to unlock the team’s potential. It’s a real start-up/scale-up environment so the role has a focus on shaping and implementing best engineering working practices, creating progression plans and frameworks for the team, and overseeing efforts to address technical debt and enhance code quality.

As mentioned they will be scaling up quickly but they don’t want to lose the engineering culture they have. You’ll be providing leadership and continuing to foster this culture; think celebrating achievements, recognizing efforts and helping to upskill team members.

A few other things they’d be looking for you to that are worth mentioning:

  • Manage resource at the head-count level.
  • Plan team structure, capacity and workloads according to key objectives.
  • Set a clear personal objectives, providing guidance, mentoring and coaching.
  • Perform administrative tasks in support of the team, including renewal of security certificates and overseeing cloud expenditure.
  • Ensure voices are amplified upwards and team members are fully utilised.
  • Implement a culture that encourages curiosity, continues improvement and honesty.

The role

What background do you need?

They are a start-up who are looking to scale rapidly, so if you’re from this kind of background then that is brilliant. It’s very much a people leadership position (they are bringing a VP of Engineering onboard to focus on technical leadership) so your strengths will lay here.

You’ll have previous experience in heading up a team, in hiring for a team, coaching and mentoring and naturally excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You’ll be able to provide some solid examples of where you’ve had to manage conflict, as well as building a strong engineering culture across cross-functional teams. One of the businesses’ core values is transparency, which should hopefully resonate.

The product is a SaaS platform so it’d be great if you’ve worked on such before. Although it’s a people leadership position you’ll still have a sound technical knowledge, in order to help inspire the team. Here’s their stack:

Python, C#, TypeScript, .NET Core, React, Azure, Redis, Terraform, REST APIs, Distributed Systems, Distributed Storage, Azure Tables, SQL Server, Cosmos, xUnit.

The candidate

What’s in it for you?

They’re offering up to £120K for the role and though the majority of the role would be remote, the engineering team do like to get together once every two weeks in London.

They’ve an attractive pension scheme which matches up to 7%, 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays and a Christmas shutdown), paid volunteering days, enhanced family policies, private medical insurance (including critical illness and life insurance), a laptop and all the tools you need to not just succeed, but thrive.
