Building an entire engineering team for Vault Platform

01

The Brief

Security software start-up Vault were looking to build an entire engineering team over two years.

They need to hire Software Engineers, a QA Engineer, a DevOps Engineer and a Lead Security Engineer. The challenge was to build not just a team, but a diverse one with a split of different ethnicities and genders – all comfortable working in the fast-paced start-up environment.

The Approach

Working with start-ups comes with its own very specific demands. Before starting, we looked beyond the brief: we had discussions with Vault about the culture they were looking to build, which was key to the candidates we targeted.

Vault wanted to build a diverse team, with a female being at least every second hire. As such the best way to approach this was to do a headhunt, narrowing candidates down by gender and of course, skillset (their entire stack was JavaScript).

We also collaborated with Vault on improving candidate feedback turnaround (by introducing a Trello Board where feedback and comments could be left, and candidates moved quickly through the stages), as well as slimming down their interview process.

The Result

Over a two year period, Zebra People hired Vault’s first Engineering Team, consisting of 10 people – 7 Software Engineers, a DevOps Engineer, a QA Engineer and an Information Security Lead.
