We’ve recently published our UX Portfolio Guidance – I believe that it’s a really valuable resource for UX candidates at any level. Over the last 5 years working in the industry I’ve seen my fair share of User Experience portfolios and to this day many practitioners are still missing the mark, some of whom have great experience but are simply not showcasing their work effectively enough to get that all important interview.
There are some great UX portfolio advice guides out there but many of them are text heavy, so the aim was to fill the gap in the market with a document that has good, visual examples of what we were trying to explain and that touches on the main areas that we discovered to be of utmost importance to our clients.
The content was produced in collaboration with industry experts, people we know truly get what a great UX portfolio should look like. These experts came from a range of backgrounds, both client side and agency.
From our research is was clear to us that there’s NOT a one size fits all solution here, but rather a pattern of what hiring managers will expect from portfolios – these patterns determined the areas that we believe candidates should focus their efforts on, and what types of deliverables UX’ers should present to showcase their critical thinking.
The guide also touches on the presentation of portfolios – we chose not to provide a template, as that would remove the element of creative individuality which is very important for the hiring managers to see, however a consistent layout and journey through your work samples is crucial. This ultimately reflects on your ability to design for the user, who in this case will be the hiring manager at your chosen company.
It is my hope that you can take away something from this UX Portfolio guide that you can implement into your portfolio to help land that dream role!
