Who they are…?

Close to a century old now and based in central London, this registered charity and not-for-profit provides unbiased advice to consumers. Whether you’re going on holiday✈️, opening a savings account 💰, picking a university 📚, need legal advice ⚖️, upgrading your phone or getting your first mortgage 🏠, they’re here to help.

They’re also entirely independent; they have no owners, shareholders or government departments to answer to and you’ll never see an advert on their websites, apps or magazines.

Not content to be the only one’s doing this, they regularly advocate and encourage businesses to adopt this same transparency and change outdated practices.

How they work and how User Experience fits in…?

The teams work in Agile product squads each with their own area of expertise i.e. finance, travel, legal etc. These product squads are usually made up of a UX Designer, UI Designer, Developer, BA, QA, Scrum Master and a Project Manager – User Researchers work across these product squads according to timelines of each project.

They’ve also completely embraced the huge benefits of User Experience. In fact, every project has started with a firm understanding of where UX will sit and the holistic effects of UX. This is even more apparent with User Research as the vast majority of projects start at Discovery with deep qualitative research being done.

 

The role

What they’re hiring for and responsibilities…?

Joining a team of 4, you’ll head up the research function in the business as the User Research Lead. It’s an exciting role because you won’t just have line management responsibilities (although you’ll have some).

You’ll work across each product squad feeding both qualitative and quantitative research insights to inform and validate the UX of products.

You’ll also have a significant impact on the product roadmap – as a brand, they are always keen on user research informing the roadmap with exploratory research into products and services that will add value to consumers.

UX: Head of UX and Design –> Principle UX –> 2 Senior UX –> 3 Midweight UX

User Research: User Research Lead (you) –> Senior User Researcher –> 2 x freelance User Researchers

Progression…?

Why you might be right…?

What to expect from the interview process…?

This will be in 2 stages. First, you’ll meet the Principle UX who you’ll talk through your CV with and any work examples you might have. Second, you’ll meet the Principle UX again but also be joined by the Head of Design and UX and one or two members of the research team. At this interview, there will be a small task to prepare in advance – this won’t involve any design or thorough research, it will be much more to understand how you would approach a research brief i.e. create a research plan for “this” problem we are trying to solve.
