UX and Service Design

Senior UX Consultant

Let's face it; working on the same thing every day can become boring. We want variety and new challenges. Agencies seem the best place to get this. Lots of clients, lots of projects. But who wants the long hours? Especially when UX is just tact on instead of being an embedded philosophy.

Now imagine finding an agency where the day ends at 5.30PM every day, each project starting with good UX, projects that include designing for Voice-enabled devices or In-Car Experiences and who also offer a chance to travel the world (expensed on them!!) ...

The client

Who they are…?

This is a digital agency that’s been around for over 2 decades with offices in London, Berlin and Poland. There’s 150 people in the London office across Media, Tech, Creative, Data, UX and more and are based within a brand-new office in Farringdon with a shared open-air rooftop.

How they work and how User Experience fits in…?

User Experience is embedded throughout the business. In fact, every project starts with a deep consideration of how and where UX and UX Research will form the basis of all decisions. UCD thinking is also very important here. No fighting for budgets, you’ll have it on every project.

UX and UX Research is also not siloed out – all UX Consultants do both Research and core UX Design. It’s one of those rare places that understands you can’t have good design without good research fundamentals.

UX Consultants also work in Agile product squads across their vast client list – Paypal, Loreal, HBO, O2, Discovery Channel and more – with each squad made up of a UX Consultant, UI Designer, Developer, BA, QA, Scrum Master, Project Manager and a few others.

The role

What they’re hiring for and responsibilities…?

Joining a team of 4, you’ll be the Senior UX Consultant on the team taking responsibility of some of their biggest and key accounts. You’ll liaise with senior stakeholders, hold workshops, conduct user research and use that insight to validate and inform the UX Design of digital products across web, mobile, voice and in-car experiences.

As a Senior member of the team, you’ll also mentor and coach junior members on team, helping them to understand the fundamentals of UX and how they can improve both professionally and personally.

There are lots of interesting case studies found on their website however, they’ve done a lot pitching recently and won some pretty cool work too that’ll be offered to you from day one. This includes:

Paypal used to be the disrupters but are now being disrupted by the likes of Monzo, Tandem etc. This agency is working with them to transform the business to allow Paypal to thrive in the world of challenger banks and give easy access to your bank accounts.

Exploring how Voice could be implemented by creating Amazon Alexa voice commands. Integrating into the website as well so that the website works much better for voice.

Complete platform redesign with additional support for in-car experiences. 2-year project that is launching in 21 countries.

UX team members often travel to see clients in Europe and to collaborate with other offices so it’s great opportunity if you love travelling and exploring the world. This isn’t mandatory though but they will offer all of this free of charge!

Team set ups…?

User Experience: Head of User Experience à Lead UX à 1 Senior UX (you) à 2 Midweight UX

No one wants to feel like they’ve hit a glass ceiling which is why they’re offering you the opportunity to progress to Lead UX as fast as you can do it and they’ll do everything they can to get you there.

Why are they hiring…?

To put it simply, they had someone fantastic in this role for 3 years. Now that person has decided to explore a new opportunity and they’d like to offer you the chance to make your mark!

Incredibly diverse – 21 different languages spoken in the office and a healthy mix of genders, race, nationalities, religions and beliefs all in the spirit of collaboration. Very proud of how diverse the teams are.

For an agency, their hours are far more realistic than others. Usually 9-5.30PM but the UX team leaves between 5-5.30PM on most days. Remote/flexible working is offered and can be agreed in advance i.e. start late, finish early or working from home once a week.

On top of this, they have a brilliant package that speaks volumes about their culture!

  • Base salary of up to £65,000
  • Holiday allowance of 25 days a year from the start + bank holidays + 1.5 days at Christmas
  • Summer Fridays: the last Friday of June, July and August are half days for everyone (on them!), no need to book it off
  • Remote working
  • Flexible hours, i.e. start and finish when YOU feel like you’re done!
  • Individual training budgets
  • Interest-free season ticket loan
  • Free breakfast and fruit
  • Health cover
  • Enhanced pension
  • Discounted gym membership

Not to mention the company having an incredibly diverse workforce, lots of events to go to, cross-collaboration across teams and lastly, a deep sense of meaning and purpose behind what you do, every single day.

The candidate

Why you might be right…?

Maybe you’re a Senior UX Consultant or Designer already but bored of working on the same thing. Maybe you’re a Senior who’s hit a glass ceiling. Maybe you’re someone who wants to coach and mentor more. Or maybe your someone who loves to do both UX and UX Research

All of these reasons and more might be why you’re right.

As with any job, no one’s perfect which is why this company encourages you to apply. As long as you’ve got few years of experience as a UX Consultant or Designer, spent some time doing UX Research and just incredibly passionate about User Experience as a whole, you should definitely apply! And don’t worry, you don’t need to be coming from an agency either.

What to expect from the interview process…?

This will be in 2 stages. First, you’ll meet the Head of UX who you’ll talk through your CV with and any work examples you might have.

Second, you’ll meet the Head of UX again but also be joined by some of the UX Consultants. At this stage, there will be a small task to prepare in advance – this won’t involve any design or thorough research, it will be much more to understand how you would approach a design brief.
