Ruby Developer to help design and build new tech to provide solutions to providing childcare options/solutions in London

The client

A VC backed growing London based start up are looking for a Ruby Developer to join their  engineering team. They are on a mission to change the childcare landscape in London – providing a platform for families and nannies to connect to make finding childcare services accessible, easy to use and affordable.

The concept was developed by their founder (who remains very active within the business) who felt there was a lack of convenient childcare options for busy families, and working parents. After witnessing friends and colleagues facing challenges around getting flexible childcare options which prevented them going back to work, she quit her job to develop the concept and the company was created.

Going from strength to strength there are around 70 employees, and you’ll be the third member within their established but growing tech team.


The role

An an engineer you’ll be designing and building tech to make complex matching problems simple, providing families and nannies a solution that works, and to enhance the companies nanny recruitment and training processes. You’ll work closely with product and operations teams to find and build creative solutions for business problems making sure the company is delivering the most value to their customers.

  • You’ll be working in Ruby for most of the backend, with Rails, PostgreSQL and Redis making up the majority of their core product.
  • You’ll be using modern frontend tooling, with ES6 and Tachyons.
  • When it comes to shipping code, you’ll be sending pull requests and doing code reviews in GitHub, and checking that CircleCI is happy before anything goes live.
  • You’ll mostly be deploying to Heroku, with some heavy lifting on AWS.

The candidate

The ideal candidate is a mid-level or experienced generalist or backend web developer who thrives in small, agile engineering teams. Apart from meeting the technical skills required; it’s important that you are interested in working in a fast paced startup environment, and are someone who takes ownership of your work from start to finish. You like to innovate and work in a collaborative team environment, and get behind the company’s mission to change the childcare landscape for the better!

  • Ideally you’ll have solid experience with Ruby on Rails
  • You are familiar with frontend development, including modern JavaScript frameworks and tooling
  • You are up to speed with web application development
  • You know your way around relational databases and SQL
  • You take pride in writing readable, well-designed and well-tested software
  • You’re keen to pair program when appropriate, and generally enjoy a culture of code review
