Principal Engineer

Genealogy Company

An established online genealogy service, who also have an extensive archive of British newspapers dating back to the early 1900s, are looking to bring on several Principal Engineers to head up newly built engineering teams.

The client

They’ve invested into engineering extensively as they look to scale up their platform even more. With billions of users around the globe and billions of online records, their mission is to connect people to their familial and historical stories.

They’re adapting to changing times in terms of remote work, with them happy for you to work from home 95% of the time – their recently finalised policy asks employees to come into the office just twice a month (they’ve hubs in Dundee and London).

The engineering team have several values that they hold close to their hearts, among them being collaboration (through paired programming and other means), quality (testing all code), long term vision, owning what they build and deploying multiple times a day.

They’ve a relatively modern tech stack, though for these roles it’s key that whoever joins has a real deep understanding of JavaScript, specifically Node (their backend is a collection of microservices running under Kubernetes), GraphQL and React, though the latter is something they can flex on. They work on AWS so prior experience here would be a boon. Other parts of their platform are built in C# and Elixir, though unless you want to it’s unlikely you’ll be touching these.

The role

As well as a solid understanding of all things JavaScript, they’re looking for someone who can:

  • Show technical leadership – it’s a Principal role so you’ll be mentoring and supporting others. They’d like someone who will champion best practices such as paired programming, automated testing and continuous deployment.
  • Technical direction – they want you to have an input into the direction of what you and your team are building. Ideally you’ll previously have led complex projects from inception to delivery, as well as having managed roadmaps with a long term view of architecture within your team.
  • Love learning – they have a daily learning hour where everyone gets to embrace teaching themselves something new, be it through paired programming, a good book or just bouncing questions off of each other.
  • DevOps – they have a DevOps culture so you must be happy to lend a hand here too.

The candidate

The interview process is a pretty straight forward one, with the first stage being more of a conversation with a member of their internal team. It’s a chance to bounce some questions off of them and get a feel for whether the role is for you, rather than a fully fledged interview. If you’re happy with how that goes they’ll look to set up an interview with the Engineering Lead and a couple of other engineers, before progressing onto a paired programming task. Lastly, there is a final round interview, where you’ll get to meet people from other disciplines within the company.

In return for the above they’re offering a salary of up to £110K, as well as a very wide range of benefits. Among these are 26 days holiday (with the option to purchase another 4), a pension contribution of up to 15.5%, flexible working (plus the remote options), enhanced paternity and maternity leave, a large L&D budget, private medical insurance, discounted gym memberships and several other perks.
