PHP Developer

Health Tech

If you’re the type of developer that values technical freedom, collaboration and working on a product which you can help shape and grow, this one might just take your fancy. It’s also a heavily backed start-up, so if that’s your thing, let me tell you a little bit more…

The client

The company have been going for around 4 years and have a team sitting at around 20 people (6 in the tech team). They are a leader in the personalised nutrition space, providing fully personalised health advice, tailor-made nutritional supplements and a full consultation service for some huge clients and individual consumers. Partnering with some extremely prolific doctors, geneticists and biomedical scientists, they customise their supplements based on rich insights derived from a series of three tests. Based on the combined expertise of an in-house team of health professionals, their AI-powered online consultation gives you an in-depth, holistic analysis of your wellbeing, considering your diet and lifestyle alongside how you feel day to day.

Their technology joins up all these data points to fully personalise your health advice and to design supplements specifically for you.

The role

The main project that you’ll be getting involved with would be the developing new features and functionality for their nutritional analysis engine. You will have a high degree of technical autonomy and leadership in the role and will be trusted to make decisions about how they scale their platform. The role will involve a combination of building features, but also rebuilding their existing monolithic platform into a microservice-based architecture using new technologies. You’ll be predominantly developing in PHP (they use Laravel) and Go (no previous experience needed, but great if you have some). You can also look forward to exposure to bits of Swift and Python, as well as the opportunity to work in a full-stack capacity using React. They’re also currently migrating their frontend over from Angular to React, so although you’ll start off more backend focussed, there’s huge scope for further skill development.

You’ll be working closely with their current tech and design teams, so a passion for clean code is a must for this one! You’ll also be building new features for the site, as well as upgrading all components of the ecosystem.

The candidate

Ideally, you’re comfortable taking part in every bit of the development process, from generating ideas and concepts, to building them using simple solutions to complex problems. You’ll need to be independent and well organised, enjoy taking ownership and responsibility for a project, and consistently deliver high quality work. They would also love someone who is enthusiastic about what they’re doing, as they’re all super ambitious and the company is driving forward in a really positive direction!

Tech requirements:

  • Proven in-depth experience with PHP
  • Comfortable working with databases like MySQL
  • MVC Experience (Ideally Laravel)
  • Experience working within a cloud environment, ideally with some AWS experience
  • Interested in microservices and aware of the benefits and drawbacks
  • Believe in clean coding and simple solutions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Interest in skill development and personal growth
  • Deem unit tests a necessary evil

It would also be great if you’re excited about the idea of working at a health-tech start-up in a role where you can make a real difference!
