Lead Engineer

SaaS start-up

Our client is a VC-backed start-up on a mission to become the first vertically integrated florist software company.

The client

Since launching in 2016 they’ve been voted one of the top UK 100 startups three years in a row, as well as having created long lasting relationships with florists across all of the UK and New York.

They’re looking to give florists the tools to create and deliver bouquets to their communities. You’d be working on developing a tool that provides inventory management, a wholesale shop and even website builders and POS systems. It is the first vertically integrated SaaS for this area of the market, so lots for you to get stuck into!

Their Engineering team currently numbers four, so you’ll be tasked with leading them. The plan is that by December they’ll have two squads, with yourself sitting at the top as the Engineering Manager.

The role

They work purely with JavaScript (with a tiny amount of PHP) so experience in the following would be ideal:

  • Node, TypeScript & React – as I said, purely JS!
  • DevOps – they work with Docker, Kubernetes and have AWS services in place, while also looking to move more over as time goes by. Experience with database management would also be useful.
  • AWS – their platform of choice. Longer term they’re looking to introduce Lambda so any exposure here would be a bonus.

It’s important to them that you cThe clientan work full stack as you’ll still be 50% hands on in the short term, though you’ll also have some level of management experience (it doesn’t need to be a huge team). They’re really keen for you to help coach their existing team and get involved with sprint planning. If you’ve got any experience with integrating 3rd party providers that would be awesome.

They’ll be the first to admit that the structure isn’t perfect at the moment so you will be asked to mould this yourself; it’s a great chance for you to have a positive effect on a company – someone who is excited to go on a journey with them would be ideal.

The candidate

These guys are very early on in the development of their product so there is a real opportunity for you to have input into how things are developed. Currently they’re completely remote but going forward they have said they’re keen to do 2/3 days in office. They’re offering a salary of up to £85K (though have said they’ll go higher for the ideal person) as well as share options. They’ve got a great office (located close to Borough market, think of all the money you could spend on food..) and you’ll be joining a hungry, innovative team. You’ll also get a MacBook Pro and they’ve got lots of ideas for more perks in the future.
