Lead Backend Developer

Outdoor Adventure Mapping

The client

Their advanced 3D mapping technology, outdoor toolkit, and curated adventure index are used by top pros and a growing global community of outdoor enthusiasts.

As they’re expanding their backend product development efforts, they’re looking for an experienced Lead Software Engineer to lead their growing team. the backend team services content, handles authentication/authorisation (including 3rd party services), and delivers a solid product in close collaboration with their front-end and design teams.

In this role you’ll be stepping up to lead the team, you’ll be comfortable becoming a service owner and diving deep into their backend work. The stack includes an application layer that is deployed as microservices and written in fit-for-purpose languages such as Ruby, Go and TypeScript as well as a Postgres/PostGIS database layer.

How do they work?

These guys have their head office in Chamonix – it’s unreal, literally right in front of Mont Blanc. They have a chalet you can crash in whenever you visit, which is pretty cool. They also have an office in Berlin, though if you’re not near any of these locations then a good percentage of their company works remotely, which they’re happy for you to do. Their teams are empowered to manage their own time and engineers are equally conscientious about communicating architecture, solutions, status, and blockers.

The role

What will I be doing?

You and your team will take end-to-end responsibility for developing new features, designing and updating internal data schemas, and adding well-defined APIs for their frontend applications – the team takes personal responsibility for functional and non-functional quality.

As a leader, you’ll take responsibility to reinforce their collaborative engineering culture and foster a friendly, open, and supportive environment. You’ll coordinate development efforts by surfacing relevant information and opinions across teams and also review interview candidates to build their engineering teams. As this is a hands-on role, you’ll help design, develop, deploy, and maintain their client-side backend services and debug potential errors and respond quickly to user feedback and metrics for their core services.

The candidate

Ruby is their primary language used however Go is what their thinking of moving over to in the future, TypeScript is also used well throughout the stack. You’ll need to have solid experience as an engineer however whether you have experience in Ruby, Go or Typescript they’re keen to see your profile. Strong English skills are a must for this role as this is the language they all communicate in.

There are also a few other things that would be a huge bonus, including;

  • Demonstrable success leading and inspiring engineering teams.
  • They expect DevOps to be handled within the teams so some AWS with Kubernetes experience would be ideal.
  • ElasticSearch, Kibana experience as they’re looking to introduce this in the future.
  • Solid language-agnostic engineering skills.
  • Well informed opinions and practice regarding code quality, testing, pair programming, linting, type safety, and code review.

Naturally, an interest in the outdoors is a huge plus point. The team in Chamonix often gets together for skiing, runs or climbing whilst they also get the whole company together twice a year to do similar.
