A Head of Creative Technology is needed to build a technology team and drive innovation through a well regarded agency

The Client

A slick international branding and design business are looking for a Head of Creative Technology to build the technology function and drive a culture of innovation throughout the agency.  Having started initially as the production arm of another agency, their work and brand was so inventive, innovative and creative that they separated over 10 years ago and became an agency in their own right.  Since then the agency have grown from strength to strength, winning a lot of cutting edge projects from the biggest names in the market and working on things such as an eye-catching data visualisation piece showing the global transactions for a payments provider to building an experiential event for a well known automotive company and an interactive visitor centre for an architecture firm.

They’re currently about 30 people strong with an incredibly collaborative, iterative and fun approach to work, they have smart open planned, top-floor offices with an inspiring view of the city along and an on-site cafe and free bar on Thursdays which often leads to an office party in the evenings.


The Role as Head of Creative Technology

As the Head of Creative Technology you’ll be the initial in-house technical expert with a focus on prototyping concepts and innovating, and when necessary overseeing the production of projects with freelancers initially but eventually with your own team.  Reporting directly to the MD you’ll be actively involved with setting the technology strategy as well as pitching for new work, you’ll have an innovation budget set as well as the opportunity to pick the technologies, the way of working and culture of the tech team.  You’ll be working on mobile apps, large web visualisation projects, retail installations and cutting edge marketing campaigns – the challenge to you is having the foresight and technical know how to build, lead and own a multi-disciplined team whilst staying on top of the latest trends in the market.  A few of the responsibilities are below:

  • Provide a voice and vision for technology and communicate it both internally and externally
  • Develop people and organisational strategies
  • Develop and maintain the overall workflow
  • Provide leadership and inspiration throughout all project phases; mentor and train, allocate work, conduct performance reviews
  • Recruit and hire. Motivate, inspire and coach the team
  • Provide project oversight as needed including requirement definition scoping and planning, creative problem solving and conflict resolution
  • New business pitches
  • Participate in research & development, new business development, client management, technical feasibility, architecture and vendor management
  • Oversee development of coding standards and guidelines as well as conducting code reviews
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and competitive landscape: make recommendations to leadership


The Candidate

You’re a true creative technologist with a great understanding of the creative process and a bit of a polyglot with technology – the typical T-shaped skillset you’ll have played with a variety of tech using a number of different programming languages and are comfortable rapidly prototyping and leading the production of projects

  • Thorough understanding of basic application architectures and principles of web, software, mobile, installation production and development
  • Ability to offer practical solutions (code) in a hands-on manner to critical software problems
  • Experience creating and consuming digital and interactive services
  • Experience with common front end tools, i.e.: CSS2/3, Javascript, WebGL, HTML5
  • Experience with a variety of back end technologies, i.e.: Python, PHP, Java, Objective-C, and DVCS (git/hg)
  • Experience managing a cross functional and cross-disciplined team
  • Experience with vendors, including web hosting companies and technology consultants in global client organisations
  • Must be able to use appropriate terminologies and language to accurately convey changes or direction in concept or design
  • Ability to interact and collaborate well with other departments within the agency to solve problems
  • Exceptional relationship building skills, presentation and overall communications skills
