FL & perm plans

One thing we looked at in Zebra People’s technology salary survey for 2017 (check it out here) was people’s plans for 2018, both contractors and permanent staff.

Unsurprisingly, when it came to permanent staff 35% said they are looking to broaden their skillset. The stability of a longer term role allows you to do this, which is also applicable to progressing through the ranks, which 39% of respondents are looking to do.

15% are looking to change to freelance. These people have tended to be in a permanent role for three years and are now looking for more variety in terms of the projects they’re working on.FL & perm plans

The feedback we got from contractors differed slightly. 53% of contractors said they are looking to broaden their skillset in the next year. The issue that employers may have with this is that they tend to bring in contractors for the skills they already have. If they are bringing in a contractor at a significantly higher rate to learn new technologies, why not invest in the long term and bring in a permanent employee? Rightly or wrongly, this is the way they often look at it.

47% of contractors are looking to become more specialised, which in today’s market can only be a good thing. Take a look at last week’s post to get a brief snippet of why specialised JavaScript developers are now earning more.
