Must have skills

With the release of Zebra People’s 2017 Salary Survey (check it out here) I’m going to be looking at a few trends that we’ve picked up on this year when it comes to the technology market.

One aspect that the survey covered is what are the ‘must have skills’ for a developer in 2017’s market. The answer was unambiguously resounding with JavaScript topping the list, followed by two of its bedfellows in React and Node.JS.

So why was this? JavaScript is a language that many developers can lend their hand to, making it versatile from the get go. More importantly, it’s a language that allows you to develop from infrastructure to UI using JavaScript and JavaScript alone.

The above paragraph helps to explain why React and Node.JS took second and third in the survey. With more emphasis being put on JavaScript by employers, the advantages of Node.JS (in allowing development on the server side) and React (on the front-end) are there for all to see. As a result the salaries of JavaScript developers have seen an increase in 2017.

With the rise of React and other frameworks, such as Angular (up to 5.x), the use of the jQuery library seems to be in decline with it having been relegated to the backbenches in terms of every day use.
