The Digital Project Management skill set is often one that’s hard to quantify. A candidate can look great on paper, but a Digital Project Manager needs to be able to effectively communicate their written experience on their CV to translate during the interview process.

Identifying a strong Project Manager needs to be done in person by evaluating experience, natural Project Management instinct, cultural and team fit and personality suited to the client.  These are soft skills that can’t be measured or evaluated by a standard formula or test.

How you come across as a candidate at interview is absolutely key, and how you prepare is crucial. Unlike interviews for other disciplines where examples of work can be presented in a portfolio, you need to be able to tangibly demonstrate examples of what makes you a great Project Manager, and essentially, why.

Preparation does take time, but will guarantee results in the following ways

Boost your confidence

It’s natural to experience pre-interview nerves, but feeling prepared will help you to remain calm and not become flustered prior to your interview. Like studying for an exam, walking in knowing you have put the work in can only work in your favour.

Improve your clarity

Having well thought out and prepared examples of Projects you have managed down to the finer details will prevent long winded, irrelevant answers and help you to provide concise responses.

Confirm your objective

Preparing for an interview will really help you to define your own personal objective. Really knowing what you want in your next role, and why gives you direction and motivation. If you aren’t sure what you want or why you are moving on this will come across at interview.

Demonstrate your skills

Do you know what makes you a good Project Manager and why? What skills have you utilised as a Project Manager and why have they been so beneficial? You need to physically be able to demonstrate your core Project Management skills, as you can’t tangibly show examples on paper of things like client facing, problem solving or team work.

Highlight your successes

Think of the interview as an opportunity for you to highlight Projects you are proud of. It’s a forum for you to outline why and what makes you a successful Project Manager. It’s your chance to showcase particular accomplishments, rather than a test of your abilities.

In Summary …

Coming out of an interview feeling unsure of how it went is usually an indicator that you haven’t prepared thoroughly. Taking the time to prepare properly will ensure that you go in feeling confident, and come out knowing that you have given yourself the best chance of landing your ideal job.
